Just over 1 year has passed since the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last year and brought a halt to the tourism industry. However, the government has been hard at work creating a 5-year plan which aims to achieve 18 million arrivals by 2016, and it looks like the industry is already showing signs of recovery.
The number of foreign visitors, which hit a record high of 8.61 million in 2010, is estimated to have dropped to 6.22 million last year following the 11 March earthquake, tsunami and the ensuing nuclear crisis.
